Its been suggested the movie companies have created this to stop piracy. Sure they will never admit this but who else would go to the trouble of: creating such a program as w3player/ripping/encoding/uploading/hosting the program on their site/bandwidth/seeding them all/etc. other than the big companies?
Makes sense to me!
