By splitting the files into numerous smaller ones, it means that it can be re-downloaded quicker instead of having to download the entire file again.
@smocozaur: you do realise what DivX and XviD are don't you? Compression algorithms for video. Uncompressed, the video file would be about 10 times larger (maybe more). Therefore, compressing a movie is anything but stupid. What I think you ment to say is "who compresses a compressed movie file?".
