What other purposes ?
-Data integrity through communications is nearly always ensure. For example, if you use uTorrent, the "Force Re-Check" function will compare your downloaded files' hash with the origin hash. If it differs, you have downloaded bad pieces !!!
-If a small bit of your files changes, the hash will greatly change. So it will be extremely complex to produce a fake torrent with same hash. (not like parity checking, CRC...)
